BRIEF

Preparation of a repair & restoration plans for William Nesfield's famous Victorian parterre gardens & fountains in the grounds of a ruined Victorian Palace, one of English Heritage’s largest and most important properties to support a submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund for capital grant aid.

NATURE OF WORK

Survey of current condition of gardens; documentary & physical research into history of gardens & planting; preparation of detailed propsals for repair of garden paths, steps, planting & fountain with specialist fountain engineer

DESIGN PROPOSALS

Following completion of Phase 1 works to the North Park in 1999, grant aided by HLF, design of proposals to restore formal gardens & the Perseus & Andromeda fountain (the largest sculptural fountain group in Europe) incl paths, stone balustrading, fences, gates and structural planting; preparation of documentation for specialist contract tenders & supervision of works on site.

PROJECT COSTS

Phase 2 works, value £1m, was approved by the HLF in early 2002
